California Changes Parole Law for Illegal Immigrants

Facing billions of dollars in budget deficits, California has announced it will not spend the estimated $10 million per year to keep illegal immigrants on parole after they have been deported.

Instead, the state says that when deported aliens re-enter California they will be turned over to federal authorities.

At a press conference this week, California corrections chief Matthew Cate said the state spends $970 million each year to imprison those convicted of illegal immigration, yet it only receives $110 million from the federal government.

Cate said because it is a federal issue, more helps needs to come from Washington.

“We need our partners in the federal government to stand beside us and send a message that if you are a felon, deported from California, and you return, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he said, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Cate also sent a letter to secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano saying that because it is a federal crime, the federal government should prosecute illegal aliens who re-enter the country after deportation.
