Napolitano calls for review of illegal immigration raid

Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano has order a review of a federal raid on a workplace in Washington state which resulted in the arrest of 28 suspected illegal immigrants.

On Tuesday, authorities from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided a manufacturing plant in Bellingham, Washington - the first such work-site raid since President Barack Obama took office.

But Napolitano said she was not aware that the raid would occur and told legislators on Wednesday that the enforcement of work-site illegal immigration needs to be a focus of employers.

Critics of the work force raids say they are disappointed with the recent event and call on Obama to put an end to the raids during his time in office.

But some believe enforcement is one of the reasons for the recent drop in illegal immigration numbers. Steven Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies, which backs the raids, tells the Associated Press he is concerned with what the Obama administration will do.

“I think that the expectation is that (Obama) will do a whole lot less enforcement, period,” Camarota said.

Figures released from Homeland Security this week show that illegal immigration numbers fell last year for the first time in since 2004.
