Obama Overturns Abortion Funding Ban

In an executive order, President Barack Obama has ended the ban on federal funds going to international groups that perform or provide information on abortions.
The so called “Mexico City policy,” which was established during the Reagan administration cut U.S. funding to any foreign group that performed abortions or lobbied to have abortion laws relaxed in their country.
The policy has been a virtual political football with Bill Clinton repealing the policy just days after taking office in 1993 and George W. Bush reinstating it in the same fashion.
Critics of the ban praised the move by Obama saying the former policy endangered the health of women in many parts of the world.
But anti-abortion groups feel the repeal from Obama will promote abortion throughout the world.
“President Obama not long ago told the American people that he would support policies to reduce abortions, but today he is effectively guaranteeing more abortions by funding groups that promote abortion as a method of population control,” Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee told the Associated Press.
