Poor Economy Forces Illegal Immigrants to Leave U.S.

A struggling economy mixed with a crackdown from law enforcement seems to have slowed the amount of illegal immigrants in a number of U.S. states.

While there are no hard numbers to prove illegal immigration has decreased, Mexican consulates in California, North Carolina and Nevada have all reported larger than normal amounts of illegal immigrants returning to Mexico from the U.S.

Enrique Hubbard, Mexican consul general in Dallas told Fox News that the numbers of immigrants leaving the U.S. doubled in 2008 compared to the previous two years.

Jose Ramirez, a 40-year-old illegal immigrant from North Carolina told the News and Observer that after four years working in the region he planned on returning to Mexico because he hasn’t been able to find a job in two months.

The Center for Immigration Studies says the exodus is taking place only among illegal immigrants with the legal immigration population continuing to grow. This would suggest that improved enforcement by local police and federal officials are making gains.

But the amount of people crossing the border back into Mexico should increase dramatically with the National Confederation of Farm Workers saying the country should prepare for an influx of 350,000 Mexicans returning.
