A task force in Nebraska is proposing that employers electronically verify the immigration status of job applicants or face stiff penalties.
The Freemont, Nebraska task force recommended to the city council that employers use the E-Verify system, a free federal internet-based system which is currently being used voluntarily by some businesses to verify immigration status.
If passed into law, employers who fail to use the system could face fines or have their business operations halted.
Critics of the E-Verify system say the system is full of flaws which can cause discrimination and possible false results.
The task force also recommended mandatory education for employers on compliance with immigration law as well as a cultural awareness class in the area school system informing students of the issues of immigration.
The E-Verify system is operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. Employers using the system can compare an employee’s I-9 form against over 444 million records in the SSA database and 60 million in the DHA immigration databases. 6.5 million queries have been run through the system this year.
