State of Economy ‘Causing Illegal Immigrants to Return’

The economic difficulties currently being experienced by the U.S. are prompting illegal immigrants from Mexico to return home in their thousands, it has been reported.

According to OpEdNews.com, the trend has been noted by the U.S. border patrol as fewer people are being arrested on their way into the country than before ,as well as by other organizations.

This is attributed to the fact that there are fewer job opportunities than before as the U.S. suffers from an economic slowdown.

Even lower-paid jobs such as those in the construction industry are less in demand because people do not have the disposable income to spend on improvements.

“For unattached males with no economic base in the U.S. and no prospects for stable employment, it may make sense to go home and try their luck again when the economy improves,” said Wayne Cornelius, director of the center for comparative immigration studies at the University of California in San Diego.

According to Congress, living in the U.S. in violation of immigration law is not a crime but a civil infraction.

The illegal immigrant population of the U.S. is estimated to be about 12 million people.

Pew Hispanic Center has estimated that 57 per cent of illegal immigrants come from Mexico, 24 per cent come from the rest of Latin America and 19 per cent come from elsewhere.
